The site chosen for Essex International Jamboree 2012 is a 120 acre site located near Chelmsford in the middle of Essex. It is 40 miles from London and located 5 miles north west of Hylands Park. It is also 2 miles east of Skreens Park Activity Centre.
Boyton Cross in Chelmsford has previously been used as a venue for large scale local community events and includes a 8 acre lake and the remainder is planted grasslands. With access to London via the A12 and M25, it provides ideal access to all Jamboree visitors.
The new site has given the chance to take a new look at the needs of the event and a layout has been created to reduce walking distances and increase circulation. The site has established road access points, good water supplies, hardened access track and most of the jamboree will be housed in one field.
The Essex International Jamboree has undergone a number of relocations over the years. The growth of the event at the first site at Belchamps between 1949 and 1980 meant a change to County Show Ground, Great Leighs until 1992. The search for a new site in 2012 was made after the uncertainty of coastal land changes to the site for three events at Kirby-le-Soken.
Boyton Cross is an arable field that has been growing wheat and other cereal, oil seed and protein crops. Once it was agreed by the participating counties to consider alternative sites a search began and this was one of a number of sites put forward for further consideration.
